Canada Gets with IT: eMarketer.

eMarketer reports that 2004 will see the first significant increase in technology spending by Canadian businesses and government since 2001. Over the past three years, IT spending in Canada has remained essentially flat, ranging between CAD $92.0 billion and $93.0 billion. But Forrester Research predicts that, at long last, spending this year will reach CAD $96.0 billion, up 4.3%.

Largest Security Study Ever Conducted Finds Asia and South America Trail North America and Europe In Security Development and Best Practice Implementation: Survey by PricewaterhouseCoopers and CIO Magazine.

Asia and South America trailed North America and Europe in security and best practice implementation according to the 2004 State of Information Security study from PricewaterhouseCoopers and CIO magazine. The second annual study also finds external factors, including regulations and potential liability, are the primary forces driving security initiatives. The research identifies best practices to combat security threats and the degree to which they have been accepted and implemented by participating organizations.

Wireless Technology for L/H Carriers: Slow, Steady Growth Ahead: Celent Report.

While wireless technology use is not widespread among L/H carriers today, we will see changes in the near future as applications mature. Celent predicts that the adoption rate for wireless projects by L/H carriers will reach 30 percent by 2007.

Canadian Economic Outlook September 2004: SwissRe.

Consumer spending and business investment will lead the economy to growth of 2.9% this year and 3.5% in 2005. Manufacturing shipments reached a new peak in July. Job growth disappointed again in August, but full-time employment increased by 15,400 jobs.

Contingency Fees Now Allowed in Ontario.

(From Canadian Insurance ENEWS:) The Ontario government today proclaimed amendments to the Solicitors Act which will give the public another option when considering legal action in non-criminal cases. Ontario is the last province to implement this choice. Although this will improve access for lower-and-middle income claimants, lawyers must sometimes wait several years before getting paid, and winning is not always a certainty.

IBC Investigative Services Reports Progress in Fight Against Organized Crime.

(From Canadian Insurance ENEWS:) In a talk to the Toronto Fraud Forum, Mr. Richard Dubin, VP Investigations for IBC told fraud examiners and members of CASUI that vehicle recovery will top $20 million this year. Auto theft represents a $600 million cost to insurers.
