Shifting from AI-assisted coding to AI-assisted delivery with IBM Bob
By Neel Sundaresan & Michael Kwok, IBM
AI has accelerated how code is generated, but bottlenecks were never just about writing code. They come from understanding complex systems, coordinating change across teams and managing risk across the software development lifecycle (SDLC). This shift requires a new model where work spans the full lifecycle instead of happening in isolated steps. Read more.

From Doug

In the 1950s, Peter Drucker coined the term “knowledge worker” to describe a professional whose primary job is to generate, analyze, or manipulate information rather than perform physical labor – an employee whose primary asset is the capacity to think and innovate.

As their main capital is their specialized expertise and problem-solving abilities, insurance-industry professionals would be knowledge workers.

This broad classification can be subdivided into two smaller groups:

Information workers apply existing information and standardized procedures to perform a specific, routine task, describing many insurance people.

Knowledge workers apply critical thinking and subject-matter expertise to create new information or strategies from raw data.

Key characteristics of this knowledge work:

• Continuous learning: these roles require ongoing education, critical thinking, and the constant adaptation of skills.
• High autonomy: knowledge workers typically dictate how their specific tasks and workflows are executed.
• Value creation: rather than tangible goods, they produce strategies, systems, improved processes, refined rules.

In practical terms, many people who have some “knowledge” responsibilities spend some or much of their time doing “information” tasks.

AI was initially seen as a tool, but more recently it has developed into a potential replacement. More next week.
