Agentic Systems and Competitive Advantage

We previously discussed the three types of benefits of agentic systems. Now, for each, ask “What happens to this value once every rival has implemented the same tools?”

1. Doing work more cheaply.

Example: Processing a claim. A certain type of claim takes on average 3 hours staff time and 5 days to close. By deploying Agentic systems, times are reduced to 2 hours staff and 2 days to close. Cost savings: 1 hour staff.

• Competitive impact: With the same tools, your competitors achieve the same results: no competitive advantage.

2. Doing more of the work with the same number of employees.

Example: Handling a service call. A certain type of service call takes 2 hours staff time to complete. Agentic systems are deployed: now time is 1 hour, yielding savings of 1 hour.

• Competitive impact: When the tools are deployed by your competitors, no advantage.

3. Making better decisions, leveraging judgments unique to your firm.

Example: Underwriting new business. A certain type averages 5 hours staff time and 10 days to complete. Agentic systems reduce times to 2 hours staff and 3 days elapsed; cost savings of 3 hours.

• Competitive impact: To the extent that reasoning and decision-making differ for each competitor, an advantage may well be maintained, and could even appreciate over time.

Next week: How to measure “better decisions.”
